Coverage by period
| Driver status | Minimum required (Ins. Code) |
|---|---|
| Logged on, available, no ride yet | $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per incident, $25,000 property damage; UM/UIM and PIP where required (§1954.052) |
| Engaged in a prearranged ride | $1 million total for death, bodily injury and property damage per incident; UM/UIM and PIP where required (§1954.053) |
A "prearranged ride" begins when the driver accepts a ride request through the app and ends when the last requesting rider leaves the vehicle (§1954.001(3)).
Who provides it
The coverage may come from the driver's own policy, the company's policy, or a combination (§1954.051). If the driver's policy has lapsed or falls short, the company must provide the required coverage "beginning with the first dollar of a claim" (§1954.054). Personal auto policies may exclude rideshare use (§1954.151).
After a rideshare crash
The same duties to stop, exchange information and report apply as in any crash (see what to do after a car accident). Whether the driver was offline, waiting or on a trip decides which coverage applies, so the app status at the time matters.
