By Greg Parsons · Updated October 18, 2026

Texas requires at least $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per crash and $25,000 property damage in liability coverage (Transp. Code §601.072). Insurers must include uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) and PIP coverage unless a named insured rejects them in writing (Ins. Code ch. 1952).

Texas minimum car insurance (30/60/25)

Since January 1, 2011, the minimum liability amounts are $30,000 for bodily injury or death of one person in one collision, $60,000 for two or more people, and $25,000 for damage to others' property (§601.072(a-1)). Driving without financial responsibility is not allowed (§601.051).

Texas uninsured motorist coverage and the rejection form

An insurer may not issue an auto liability policy in Texas unless it provides UM/UIM coverage, at least at the Chapter 601 limits. The coverage does not apply "if any insured named in the insurance policy rejects the coverage in writing" (§1952.101). Once rejected, the insurer need not add it back on renewal unless the named insured asks in writing.

Underinsured motorist coverage pays what you are legally entitled to recover from an underinsured driver, up to your policy limit, reduced by what that driver's insurer pays (§1952.106).

PIP must also be included unless a named insured rejects it in writing (§1952.152). PIP pays reasonable medical expenses, lost income (for an income producer) and essential household services arising from an accident and incurred within three years, for the named insured, household members and authorized drivers and passengers (§1952.151). Insurers pay PIP benefits within 30 days of satisfactory proof of a claim (§1952.156).
